It is not the yoga teacher training what makes one a yoga and mindfulness teacher. It is the love for yoga and for people, the dedication, and most importantly: the reason why you do it.

If it is because you want to feel special or a la mode, or you need a motivation for yourself to workout regularly and lose weight, or you just feel unhappy and trapped in your own misfortunes and problems, then being a yoga teacher is not what you are supposed to do. You will probably become useful to yourself, but not to the others. If you are teaching because you feel the need of helping others and healing their physical, emotional and spiritual wounds and discomforts, then being a yoga teacher really makes sense.

The first yoga teacher training I did came to me as a blessing and just at the right time. I was living in Asia, the mother of yoga, and I was inhaling the yogi, Buddhist and Hindu traditions right from the source. For the first time in my life I was living abroad, away from my family, and with a man (my current husband and my one and only love). I was in a magical period of meeting new friends who later became some of the closest and most beloved people in my life. It was a ‘time to grow up and find who I really am’ kind of period for me. And this is where Fitness First’s 3-months yoga teacher training played its very special role.

It was the most physically, mentally and emotionally exhausting thing that I have ever done, and yet the most rewarding, enriching and transformational. It wasn’t, however, all the fancy sequencings, advanced asanas and fascinating anatomical specifications of the human body that we learned what I found the most essential. The most important lesson that my master Nick Heng taught me was what being a teacher really meant: not just an asana presenter, but a spiritual teacher, and emotional and physical healer, that special someone that would help others become a better versions of themselves. And this is what I took from that training, and what I was spreading as a message for the next 4 years.

The second training that I did was a dream come true. A long awaited and desired meeting with the greatest of all yogis: Shiva Rea. Being able to learn Prana Flow from the one person who invented that style and introduced it to the world, and the one person who had been my greatest inspiration and role model in yoga for years, was transformational enough on its own. Yet, every single moment of that training was a small rebirth for me.

What I took from this one was the sense of being part of a big, inspiring family: a group of people that you hardly know, and yet you feel like you have known them your whole life. I also took the feeling of being deeply connected to Mother Nature: to the mountains, the caves, the sea, the sound of the trees, the sun, the sky, the sunset and the sunrise. Just being connected to IT! What I took was the freedom. The freedom of being who you are without being judged; the freedom of spontaneously dancing for hours until the sun goes down; the freedom of letting yourself miss the one you love the most, even if you are separated for an hour or so, without feeling guilty or ashamed; the freedom of being fearlessly creative. The freedom of being free.  And those are the messages that I’ll be spreading for the rest of my life.

Now you may think: what is that article all about? The answer is: I am not sure either. It is probably just a spontaneous, honest cogitation about what being a yoga teacher really means; or maybe it is a nostalgic journey to my distant and not so distant past; or is it my way of saying thank you to all the people who showed me the way to yoga and taught me who I really was through yoga? I don’t know. What I know is that I am who I am today because of them, because of him, because of me. I have become a real yoga teacher, and I have managed not only to heal myself, but to heal others too. And that, my friends, is what being a yoga teacher is all about.
