WHY WE SHOULD ALL LOVE GREEN SMOOTHIES.

Green smoothies are the ‘IT’ in the contemporary healthy nutrition. From top nutritionists like Dr. Ann Wigmore and Kimberly Snyder, to fabulous celebrities such as Anne Hathaway and Colin Farrell: they all advocate the latest health craze!

1. Green smoothies are the perfect breakfast.

A green smoothie is the perfect start of the day. It is a great source of clean morning energy and at the same time, when consuming it, we are not shutting off the body’s cleansing mechanism and our energy is not directed to digestion, but to accumulating lasting beauty energy. Unlike purely fruit smoothies, the green ones have balanced sugars due to their high content of veggies. This makes the energy that we obtain from them more lasting, as their nutrients are not as quickly metabolized as sugar is.

 

Green smoothies are low in calories but very filling. Because they contain high amounts of water and fiber, they’ll make you feel full, yet light. Be aware, however, that once you start consuming green smoothies for breakfast, you have to give your body some time to get used to the new habit. Up to a week after you start drinking them you may get hungry quite fast, especially if before you have been eating heavy breakfasts with lots of protein and carbs. Just have some fresh fruit or raw nuts in your pocket for the times when you feel like you need some extra something. With time your body will get used to having only green drinks in the morning and you will start feeling their real power.

 

2. Green smoothies are powerful beauty and health providers for our bodies.

Green smoothies are the most powerful source of essential elements such as vitamins, fiber, minerals and enzyme. Drinking even only one green smoothie a day will maximize your intake of these elements like nothing else could. No supplements or ‘powdered’ food could ever replace real foods.

Most people have trouble getting their daily requirement of greens. And yes, your mother was right: eating your greens is essential and can really improve your health. In fact leafy green vegetables can thin the blood, ensuring oxygen is delivered efficiently around the body and cutting the risk of dangerous clots, strokes and heart attacks. They also set off a chain reaction that widens and opens blood vessels and converts bad white fat cells into good brown, fat-burning cells. With this greens help in cases of obesity and type 2 diabetes. A green smoothie is the most efficient, and at the same time, delicious way to get all the greens your body needs, especially if you don’t enjoy them cooked or in a salad. In green smoothies, the taste of the greens is hidden by the taste of the fruit, so you don’t even notice the veggies are there. This balance in the taste makes them a good way to get kids to “eat” their vegetables. You might need to start with a higher proportion of fruit vs. vegetables until they get used to the flavor.

They are easy and quick to make (need not more that 5 min). Plus they are relatively cheap. Way cheaper and efficient that multivitamins!

 

Tips and tricks on making the perfect greens smoothie:

300 ml mineral or filtered water

1 banana

The juice of ½ lemon

The juice of ½ orange

 

From here you could add a handful or two of one or more of your favorite greens: kale, spinach, parsley, rocket, etc. Then throw in any fruit/s that you fancy. However, greens don’t go well with certain types of fruit such as berries. The best fruit choice for a green smoothie would be kiwi, pineapple, mango, melon and apple, but you could always experiment and find the fruits that give the taste, freshness and consistence that you like the most. Lastly you could add a tsp. of any powdered supplement that you fancy. We suggest you try it with baobab powder, as it has a fresh citrusy taste and makes the smoothie even more creamy and fruity. Plus it is rich in antioxidants and essential nutrients, and minerals.

Ingredients:

300-350 ml filtered or mineral water

A handful of spinach

1 handful of rocket

The juice of ½ lemon

The juice of ½ orange

1 banana

½ cucumber

Some fresh mint and basil (optional)

 

Directions:

Put all ingredients in the blender and blend until smooth. Pour into a glass and enjoy!

 

Green and Creamy

Serves: 1

Prep. Time: 2 min

Total Time: 5 min

 

Ingredients:

300 ml water

A handful of spinach

1 handful of lacinato kale

The juice of ½ lemon

1 banana

A slice of honeydew melon

 

Directions:

Toss all ingredients in the blender and blend well until frothy. Bottom up!
